Floyd L. Prouty of Bainbridge, New York, passed away at home on Friday, November 14, 2014. He was born to the late Floyd L., Sr. and Edna Failing Prouty on August 20, 1931 in Ellisburg, New York. He married his loving wife Carolyn M. Brown on June 20, 1953. She predeceased him on December 23, 1999.
He is survived by three sons, David and wife Erika of Oneonta, ; Andrew and wife Linda of Bainbridge; and Daniel and wife Rebecca of Rochester; a daughter, Martha and husband William Hagen of Mt. Airy, Maryland; a sister, Elizabeth Phillips of Watertown; eight grandchildren; Daina and Joseph Kocak of Binghamton; Kirsten Prouty of Westfield , Massachusetts; Chandler Prouty of Oneonta; Katelyn and Victoria Prouty of Bainbridge; Miranda Hagen of Fairfax, Virginia; William Hagen of College Park, Maryland; Lydia Prouty of Rochester; and one great-grandson; Grayson Kocak of Binghamton. He was also predeceased by his brother, Donald Prouty.
Floyd graduated from Cortland State in 1953. He served nearly two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Augusta, Georgia. Upon returning to New York, he taught for five years at Greene Central School. His family moved to Bainbridge in 1960 and he was appointed the elementary school administrator there for twenty-seven years. Floyd was an active Rotarian since 1961, and was a Past President and Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient. He was also responsible for starting an Interact Club in the Bainbridge School District. Floyd served on the Bainbridge-Guilford school board from 2006-2009. He was village trustee and mayor in Bainbridge after retiring in 1987. He was very active in the Sidney First Baptist Church and served as a deacon and elder, and was Commander of the AWANA Club there for ten years. Retirement also gave him the opportunity to play golf regularly and to write several historical studies.
A memorial service will be held at the Sidney First Baptist Church, 28 River Street, Sidney, New York, on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 11:00 am, with Rev. Kenneth Southworth officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge, New York. Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney First Baptist Church, 28 River Street, Sidney, New York.
