Fern K. Quick Sidney, NY On Christmas Day, Fern (Kolb) Quick, 92, of Sidney, went to be with the Lord, joining her beloved mother, sister and husband. She passed peacefully at A.O. Fox Hospital following a brief illness. She was born July 10, 1921 in Binghamton, NY, the daughter of the late George Fay Kolb and Margaret Elizabeth (Green) Kolb. On June 23, 1946 at the Choconut Center Methodist Church, where she was a member and Sunday School teacher, she married Richard J. Quick. Fern attended the Choconut Center Elementary School, then the Johnson City High School, graduating in June 1938. She then went on to the Binghamton Lowell School of Business while doing part time work in the office of Kolb Electric on nearby Court Street. Fern worked for the clerk of the Broome County Board of Supervisors at the Broome County Office Building in Binghamton. She also served as a relief telephone operator at the building's switchboard. Fern worked for many years in Sidney in the dental office of Dr. Fred Rothman. She also worked as a recorder for Hunt Auctions and a secretary for Bill Hunt. In 1950, Fern joined the United Methodist Church of Sidney, where she became a faithful member of the Chancel Choir. She retired from the choir in 2006. Fern participated in various Tri-Town Theatre productions, was a member of the late Festival Chorus of Sidney, a volunteer at Red Cross blood drives, and was a member of Hover's Western Square Dance group in Sidney. She was a born naturalist, having spent many years in the out-of-doors, especially bird watching. She could identify many by sight and by their song. She also enjoyed studying and collecting antiques. Fern was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spent many hours teaching her grandchildren the love and appreciation of nature. She is survived by: Her daughter, Darrylin Dart (Jefferson, NY) Son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Linda Quick (Unadilla) Grandchildren: Danielle and Jeremy Stout (Worcester, NY), Jessica and David Dufford (Saratoga Springs) and Matthew Quick (Unadilla) Great-grandchildren: Grayden and Natalie Dufford and Portia and Sonoma Stout Brother and sister-in-law, George and Chuan Kolb (Norwich) Sister-in-law, Evelyn Kanazawich (Vestal) As well as several nieces and nephews. Fern was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend, Richard J. Quick, her mother, Margaret Kolb, and her sister, Barbara Allen Kiegler. Graveside committal services will be held at 12noon on Friday, June 6, 2014 in Vestal Hills Memorial Park, Vestal. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Audubon Society, www.audobon.org, or Dept. W, 700 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 or to the Sidney United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St. Sidney. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family online at www.landersfh.com.
