Bertha H. Redmond, 85, of East Guilford, NY passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.
She was born in Oneonta, NY on January, 29, 1927, the daughter of Florence and Jesse Horth and the youngest and last surviving sibling of 13 brothers and sisters.
She graduated from Walton High School, received a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Cortland and a Master's degree from SUNY Oneonta.
She married Francis Redmond on June 28, 1949, and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage. He predeceased her by three months.
Bertha was a devoted teacher in the Guilford, Unatego and Sidney school districts. In 1970, she began a 19-year career as a teacher at The New York State Division for Youth at Camp Brace where she taught reading and health.
She always enjoyed vacationing with her family and friends, and after her retirement she applied for a passport and traveled to many diverse countries and locales. Bertha also was happy at home spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the many friendships she made in league and tournament play through 20th Century Lanes in Sidney. Bertha's bowling career spanned 60 years and she was inducted into the Tri-County Bowling Hall of Fame.
She served for a number of years on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Sidney and was a member of the Sidney Youth Advocate Group. She was also very involved in The Hospital Guild and volunteered for many years at The Hospital Coffee Shop.
Bertha is survived by her children: Tom (Sherry) Redmond, Jerry (Jane) Redmond, Carole (Tom) Stanbro and Cassie (Mike) Knapp; and grandchildren: Corey, Brennan, Kelsey, Paige, Lindsay and Sydney; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two dear, long-time friends, Arlene Arrandale and Eileen Cornell.
The family would like to thank her special caregivers, Alicia, Cass, Crystal, Lois, Lonnie and Nadine, as well as the staff at At Home Care.
Friends are invited to call from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney. A memorial service will begin at 3:00pm at the funeral chapel. Burial will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mt. Upton Emergency Squad or the Guilford Emergency Squad.
