Cassius Donald Hitchcock Sidney, NY Don (Cassius Donald) Hitchcock passed away on November 23, 2012. The son of Arthur and Florence (Dunkley) Hitchcock, he was born in North Creek, NY, on February 27, 1928. Don attended North Creek School. He was employed at Barton Mines prior to enlisting in the Army-Air Force in 1945 and was in the European Theater of Operations. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. He attended Veteran's Training School in Troy, NY for Radio & Communications Specialist. Don started his career with Link (Singer/Link) flight simulations in 1954 and worked for 35 years retiring in 1989. In 1990, Don took an at home course for Locksmithing and became a licensed New York State Locksmith. He started D & G Locksmith which he operated until 2010. Don was Mayor of the Village of Afton from 1986 to 1998. He was a Life Member of the Afton VFW and the Sidney Moose Lodge. Don was a little league coach and player/coach for the Afton Sertoma baseball team. He enjoyed attending his children's sporting events and spending time with his grandchildren. Computers were a passion; not a day would go by that you would not find Don on his computer doing something. He loved taking them apart just to put them back together again. Don also enjoyed hunting whitetail deer with his sons. He leaves behind his faithful dog, Zoli. Don was predeceased by Georgia Chloe Hitchcock. Surviving are his children: Edward (Linda M.) Hitchcock of Sidney, George (Gloria) Hitchcock of Victor, Stephen Hitchcock, Sr. of Afton, Linda D. Hitchcock (Greg Nowark) of Binghamton, Greg (Andrea) Hitchcock of Sidney and Ronald, Sr. (Tracy) Hitchcock of Plessis; his grandchildren, Ann (Jon) Schwab, Jennifer Smith, Steven, Jr. (Melissa) Hitchcock, Jeremy (Lisa) Hitchcock, Stephenie Hitchcock, Mary Hitchcock, Joshua Hitchcock, Kylee McKnight, Alex Hitchcock, Ronnie Hitchcock, Jr., Nicholas McKnight, Rebecca Hitchcock, Brandon Hitchcock and Collin Hitchcock; his great grandchildren: Ian and Chloe Schwab, Gavin and Ayden Hitchcock, Samantha Poole, Gage Strong, Ashley Smith, Daniel Smith, Jr. and Dylan Smith. He is also survived by his sister, Vonda (Washburn) and Edward Engle of Hudson Falls, and brother, Gerry and Marilla Washburn of Fort Ann, NY. He was predeceased by his siblings, Robert Washburn, Alberta Ross, Ken Washburn, Ona Cooper, Wilma Prouty, Frank Hitchcock, Harold Hitchcock and Wilda (Billie Kay) (Washburn) Martin. Don will be greatly missed by those that loved him. Friends may call on Friday, November 30, 2012 from 1:00-2:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral chapel. Burial and military honors will take place in Eastside Cemetery, Afton, NY.
