Unadilla, NY - Frederick S Jones, known as Ted, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012. Born on August 29, 1934, he was the son of Jack and Vida Jones. Ted was the beloved husband of Doris (Olsen); loving father of his three sons and their wives, Mike and Karen E Jones, Mark and Verna Jones and David and Karen L Jones; devoted grandfather of John, Matthew and wife Holly, Timothy, Dillon, and Kristen, step grandchildren Chad and Stacy Rivenburg and daughter Cynthia, Daughn and Justin Canfield. Ted was predeceased by his parents, sister Daryle Thurston and granddaughter Ellie Jayne. Growing up Ted was a member of the Boy Scout Troop 1 from Unadilla. He graduated early from Unadilla Central School. In April of '54, Ted married his high school sweetheart Doris Ann Olsen from Otego. Ted proudly served his country as a Navy Air Electronics Technician. He served with the Fighter Squadron Seventy One (VF-71), Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron Two and the Air Anti Submarine Squadron Thirty Nine (VS-39). He was Honorably Discharged in November '59. Upon graduating Albany State Teachers College, Ted was offered a teaching position at Sidney Central School. He taught physics and mathematics. He received his Masters from the State College at Oneonta. He was a negotiator for the Sidney Teachers Association. Ted started the Sidney High School Rifle Club and the competition rifle team. He was the clock operator for basketball and football games. Over the three decades of teaching, Ted had established the oldest and longest sustained high school calculus program in NY state. He was the first teacher to teach calculus classes through telecommunications. Ted's community service was not limited to teaching. He served on the Vestry of St. Matthews Episcopal Church. He also served on the Town of Sidney Zoning Board of Appeals. Ted starred in several Tri-Town Theater productions including "The King and I" and "Dracula". His hobbies included being an avid fisherman, bow hunter, bowler and woodworker. Ted and Doris were active in the Sidney Boat Club and they camped at Sylvan Beach for many years. In lieu of flowers and cards, donations may be made to Sidney Dollars for Scholars or your local SPCA.
