Socrates A. Nellis 89 of Sidney passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at his home.
He was born September 12, 1922, son of the late George and Edna (Silvey) Nellis in Afton, NY.
Soc was raised by his grandparent Rexford and Myra Silvey in Bainbridge. He graduated from Bainbridge Central Scholl with the Class of 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and was in the Battle of the Bulge. Soc was wounded and recovered from his wounds over five months as a POW. He was honorably discharge in 1945 having been decorated with the Purple Heart, 3 Bronze Service Stars, EAME Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Soc worked for the Government for a short time before returning home and working for Bendix in Sidney. He retired in 1983 as a Selling Price Analyst.
Soc married Janice McPherson on July 24, 1960 in Bainbridge. He was a longtime member of the Bainbridge American Legion Post #806 and loved bluegrass music.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 52 years, Janice Nellis of Sidney

Friends may call Friday, June 8, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St. Sidney. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM
Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Greenlawn Cemetery Association 138 Dingman Hill Road Bainbridge, NY 13733.
