Ruth Amanda LeCaro Peckham, age 100, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 26, 2012. Ruth was born August 20, 1911 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Andrew J. LeCaro and Helen G. (Burnett) LeCaro. Ruth and Rolland C. Peckham were married August 6, 1950 in Bainbridge. Rolland predeceased her on March 23, 2005.
Ruth began her career as a school Librarian and English teacher for Harpursville School from 1937 until 1942 when she became the librarian in Oneida, NY. Ruth then worked for several years as guidance counselor at Sidney High School dedicated to helping many juniors and seniors with their college planning. She received her B.S. degree from NY State Teachers College Albany in 1934 and her master's degree from Columbia University in 1944. Ruth and Rolland took great pride in the preservation of the historic Truman House and were also active at the General Clinton Canoe Regatta by operating the popcorn and cotton candy booths. Personal care and attention by friends and care givers allowed Ruth to stay in her home.
Friends may call on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 6:00-8:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. A memorial service is planned for 11:00am on February 18, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge. Rev. Diarmuid O'Hara, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ruth's name may be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.
