Wilson James "Turk" Olmstead, 95, of Sidney, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2011 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. He was born on June 26, 1916, son of the late Walter A. and Iva (Covey) Olmstead in Sidney.
During his youth, Turk was an outstanding athlete, playing softball and golf. He graduated from Sidney High School with the Class of 1935. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 17, 1950, he was married to Ruth Taylor in Bainbridge, NY. She predeceased him on March 4, 2004 after 54 years of marriage. He was a toolmaker at Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for 45 years, retiring in 1981. Turk was a longtime member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club and the Charles L. Jacob American Legion Post 183 in Sidney. He was also a dedicated member of the Sidney Fire Department MacDonald Hose Co., recently being honored for 70 years of service.

Son, Richard Olmstead and Diane Des Marteau of Kankakee, Ill.
2 Daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanne and Jerry Birdsall of Sidney
Kathy and Paul Cummings of St. Peters, MO
Two Grandchildren, Brett and Brenna Cummings
Sister-in-law, Pearl Gilmour of Connecticut
As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Turk was predeceased by two brothers, Nathan and Charles Olmstead, and five sisters: Charlotte Christensen, Emma Murphy, Mable O. Cable, Bertha Olmstead and Zella Olmstead.
Friends are invited to call from 2:00-3:00pm on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. A Fire Department Service will follow at 3:00pm at the funeral chapel. Burial with military honors will take place in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Turk's name may be directed to the Sidney Fire Dept., 72 River St. Sidney. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.landersfh.com.
