Obituary of Jeremy A. Matviak

Please share a memory of Jeremy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Jeremy Matviak announce that he passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023, after a heroic seven-year battle with cancer. An exceptionally dedicated businessman, avid sports fan, and pillar of the community, he leaves behind a beautiful legacy of loving selflessness, iron discipline, and a vibrant sense of humor. He will be treasured forever. Jeremy was born on April 26, 1975 to Andrew and Susan Matviak and was a lifelong resident of the Sidney community. Known throughout his youth as a humorous person who had a nickname for everyone, he also thrived academically and through extracurricular activities including cross country, golf, but especially wrestling. After graduating from Sidney Central High School in 1993, he continued his love and dedication to wrestling into college, participating in several tournaments and competitions at SUNY Oneonta. After graduating from SUNY Oneonta in 1997, he went on to get his Master's in Business Administration from Binghamton University and then proceeded to run the family business, VEP/Waldron's, with his father. Anyone who entered the store would always be greeted with a warm smile, enthusiastic wave, and an immediate offer of help. He was truly dedicated to making the business adapt and grow with the times, and every aspect of the store can be attributed to this mindset and partnership with his father. He was also a member of the Sidney Rotary Club and Sidney Village Board. Always a kid at heart, he will forever be known for his massive comic book collection, love of LEGOs and super heroes, unrelenting dedication to the New York Mets and New York Jets, as well as his frequent travels to his favorite vacation spot, Walt Disney World. Jeremy will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and community. He is survived by his parents, Andrew and Susan Matviak, siblings Jason [Kalee Schnelzner] Matviak, and Jaime (nee Matviak) [Mark] Weller, partner Jodie Beach, as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY, 13838. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26 at C.H. Landers. A burial for immediate family members will follow at 12:00 p.m. in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. Following the funeral a celebration of life reception will be held at the American Legion Post 183, 22 Union Street, Sidney, NY, 13838. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Jeremy's name to either of the following: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the Lourdes Hospital Foundation in Binghamton, NY. Jeremy's generous spirit, limitless optimism, and unending love for those around him will be with us forever. In the words of his favorite superhero, Batman: "It is not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me." His legacy and love will endure forever.
