Obituary of Joyce A. Whitney

Joyce A. Whitney, 89, of Afton, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2023 at Bridgewater Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in Binghamton. Joyce was born on July 21, 1934 in Afton, the only child of the late Allen Raymond Mitchell and Nora (Perry) Mitchell. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Bainbridge Guilford Central School where she was a majorette with the marching band. On July 10, 1954, she was married to Robert Whitney in Bainbridge. He predeceased her June 13, 2007 after nearly 53 years of marriage. Joyce worked as a Senior Draftswoman for Bendix in Sidney and was involved in the Apollo Space Program in the 1960s. She later worked as a home care aide for seniors. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, golfing and softball, and especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Afton. She is survived by two sons, Thomas and Suzanne Whitney and Rick and Martina Whitney; 5 grandchildren: Steven (Ashley), Louis (Arlene), Michael, Ethan and Sasha; and 7 great-grandchildren. Joyce's family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff and nurses at Bridgewater Nursing Home for their care and compassion. Graveside services will be held at 4:00pm on Friday, August 11, 2023 in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joyce's memory may be directed to St. Ann's Episcopal Church, 125 Main St. Afton, NY 13730.
