Raymond F. Selleck
Unadilla, NY
Raymond F. Selleck, 92, passed away on May 30, 2023 at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. Ray was born on July 13, 1930, son of the late Raymond E. and Edna (Smith) Selleck in his grandmother's home in Delhi, shortly before the arrival of his twin brother, Ralph.
He spent his childhood on his grandparent's farm in Meridale, where his passion for horses began. Ray graduated from Delaware Academy in 1949, where he ran track and cross country. He was also known as King of the Dance. In 1951, he enlisted in the US Air Force and proudly served on the biggest bomber at the time. He was honorably discharged in 1955 after 4 years of service.
On July 21, 1956, he was married to Joyce Allen. They shared over 25 years of marriage before she predeceased him in 1982. On February 11, 1983, he remarried Jean Shields, who predeceased him in January 2017 after 33 years of marriage.
Ray worked a number of jobs over his lifetime, most notably 28 years with Custom Electronics in Oneonta, where he retired in 1993 as Chief Inspector and Quality Control Manager. Following retirement, he was a driver for At-A-Glance in Sidney for 13 years. He also got back into horses, which he owned and raced at Pocono Downs.
Ray loved to golf and play softball and baseball, as well as hunting. Ray was a gifted social organizer and relished the role: he set up many hunting drives and also organized a trip to Nationals for his softball team, in which they took 9th place. He was a member of the Unadilla Rod & Gun Club, and a life member of the Sidney American Legion Post 183 and the Sidney Elks Lodge 2175.
Ray is survived by: four daughters: Raylene and Danny Hackett, Jacqlene and Steve Rose, Michele and Richard Pomeroy and Brenda and Al Brunner; 5 grandchildren: Sarah Codington, Timothy Pomeroy, Jeff Brunner, Aaron Brunner and Cody Rose; and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth and Bill Goodrich; Jean's son, Thomas and Diane Tompkins and their children and grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his beloved wives, Ray was predeceased by his parents and his twin brother, Ralph.
