Obituary of William Morrell Sherman

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of William "Bill" Morrell Sherman Sr., of Afton, announce the passing of their Poppy on February 12, 2023 with his childhood sweetheart, children, and grandchildren surrounding him at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY. Bill was 78. He came out a hero and stayed strong until the end sharing memories, insight and love. William Morrell Sherman Sr. was born on December 27, 1944 in Sidney, NY, son of the late Morrell Arthur Sherman and Faith Doris Sherman of Afton. Poppy enjoyed sports in his early years. He loved the outdoors and was a gifted hunter, spending hours in the woods with his son. He had a love of horses from an early age and this passion was passed down to his children and grandchildren. He could be seen at the Delaware County Fair at the horse ring watching his grandkids show their horses. He was a perfect "groom" holding horses and giving kids a boost up when needed. He was an avid fan of the Giants and Yankees. Some of his fondest memories involved football and baseball. He was fortunate to attend a few games in person and his eyes would light up whenever he talked about it. One thing that was always important to Poppy was family. He worked hard to be sure his family was taken care of. He operated many farms all over NY and was one of the hardest workers. He always gave 110% in all he did. He attended countless dance recitals, horse shows, soccer games, basketball games, and birthday parties. He could always be seen surrounded by the kids smiling. Poppy will be greatly missed but the unconditional love he showed while he was with us will help to carry us through. He will be lovingly remembered by his lifelong companion and best friend, Bert (mommy), of 56 years, daughter Lorie Sherman of Laurens, daughter Connie Markus (Tom) of East Meredith, son William Sherman Jr. (Terri) of Sidney Center, and daughter Tammy Christman (Corey) of Oneonta. Bill had eight grandchildren: Samantha Colasuonno, Ashley Sherman (Bryan), Connor Sherman, Ariana Brown-Christman, Molly Sherman, Caleb Christman, Jordin Sherman, and Brayden Christman. He also had three great grandchildren, Quinn Colasuonno, Jayce Marciano and Aviana Marciano. Bill will also be remembered by his sister Millie Lockwood (Lefty) of Afton, sister Dixie Schultz (Roger) of Nineveh and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Richard Sherman and Rocky Sherman. Dad was a gentle man who lived a quiet life. Instead of a funeral, he'd want all who knew him to take a walk in the country, feel the breeze, the sun, and the gentle rains. He would want us to soak in the smells, enjoy the sounds and later in the year, on a hot humid day, hear the corn grow. At night, look to the sky and see the lights of heaven shining through the stars. Every farmer puts his land to rest for the winter. On spring's horizon, it is brought back to life. God has put this farmer to rest, and with a spring in his step, he walks the horizon to a new life. The immediate family would like to invite family and friends to join them to honor Bill's life at C.H. Landers Funeral Home, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY, on February 22, 2023 from 5-7pm. At 7pm, Pastor Dave Gatje will offer a short service and a time to share stories and memories.
