Randolph (Randy) Joseph Simonds of Leesburg, Florida passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the age of 59 in his home.
Randy was born June 18, 1963, in Binghamton, New York. He graduated from Sidney Central School in Sidney, NY in 1981 and went on to serve an active role in the United States Coast Guard from 1982-1986. Prior to his release from active duty, Randy was part of the emergency response to the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in January of 1986, which was, at the time, the largest search and rescue mission the Coast Guard had performed in its history. Randy then transitioned into reserves until 1988. After his service on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas, Randy moved to Florida in 1990 where he spent many years as an avionics mechanic at the Leesburg International Airport. In his spare time, Randy was a local Boy Scout Leader for many years.
Randy held many titles in his life, but his favorite role was being a father. He loved nothing more than watching his sons grow into the men they are today. Aside from his love for family, Randy was passionate about the Coast Guard, NASCAR, and collecting eagles. He is known for his kind heart and willingness to always offer a helping hand.
Randy is preceded in death by his father, Carlton Simonds. He is survived by his mother, Mary Roberta Fawcett Simonds Trask; two sons, Matthew Michael Simonds, wife CareyLee, and grand-daughter Magnolia Simonds who he cherished; and Jaron (Jay) Earl Simonds and wife Leslie and step grand-son Zachery Boling. He is also survived by his brothers Scott Simonds, Michael (Chris) Simonds, Tracy (Cheryl) Simonds, and Brian (Beth) Simonds and sister Wendy Simonds (Chris) Weidman.
Randy’s family will host a celebration of life with honor guard that will be held at 4:00 PM, Friday February 17th at Beyers Funeral Home, 1123 W Main Street Leesburg, Florida 34748.
