Obituary of Barry S. Ellis

Barry S. Ellis, 60, of Sidney, passed away on December 15, 2022. Barry was born on July 14, 1962 in Hancock, NY. He graduated from Walton High School with the Class of 1981, and shortly after, enlisted in the US Navy. Following graduation from Operations Specialist "A" School in November 1981, he had several duty stations including Hawaii and San Diego, and received both the Good Conduct Award and Navy Commendation Medal. He retired from the Navy in 1994 due to declining health. Barry was a devoted member of the American Legion, beginning at the Hancock Post before joining the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 in Sidney where he had served as chaplain at one time. He was also a past commander for Delaware County. In November 2020, he received a DAV Certificate of Appreciation for his commitment to Veterans. Barry was a longtime member of the McDonalds Coffee Club. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching all sports including, NASCAR and golf. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. He enjoyed reading and had a love for animals; he especially missed his dogs, Freckles, Sammy and Mickey, who predeceased him. Barry had an amazing gift of recall, and could remember just about anything. He was a treasure to his family and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his brother, Tim (Daph); sisters, Elaine (Robert) and Dawn (Kirk); sisters-in-law, Terri and Linda; special cousin, Chrissy; 35 nieces and nephews, 32 grandnieces and nephews, and 2 great-grandnephews, as well as numerous cousins. He is also survived by foster mother, MaryLou McGowen. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald Ellis Sr. and Bertel (Paro) Ellis, and his brothers, Darwin, Donald Jr., Randy, Clarence, Dennis Sr., Loren, and Kevin/Steve. A memorial service for Barry will be held at 1:00pm on January 7, 2023 at the Sidney American Legion Post 183, 22 Union Street, Sidney, NY 13838. Graveside military services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, May 13, 2023 in Walton Cemetery, Walton, NY. Share condolences and memories online at www.landersfh.com.
