Bettye J. Laird, 88, of Mt. Upton passed away Friday, September 3, 2021 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. She was born July 17, 1933, daughter of the late Joseph and Julia (Jurica) Havel in Johnstown, NY.
Bettye was a registered nurse and worked at various healthcare facilities in the area, retiring from the Oneonta Nursing Home as the Director of Nursing. After retirement, Bettye served as the chaplain and very active member of the Sidney Elks Lodge #2175.
She was also a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. Bettye was a pillar of the church volunteering for many events, especially coordinating the Treasure Chest at the annual Harvest Festival. Bettye enjoyed bowling, bingo, playing cards and trips to the casino. Bettye was like a mother to many and she will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
She was married to Donald M. Laird, Sr. for 46 years when he predeceased her on February 5, 2001. She is survived by 3 sons and daughters-in-laws – Donald, Jr. and Jenny Laird, Mundelein, IL, Michael and Maggie Laird, Piney Flats, TN and Timothy and Carol Laird, Swedesboro, NJ; 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, Brother and sister-in-law, James and Tina Mylott, Johnstown, NY, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was also predeceased by her brother, John Havel.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 8, from 5-7PM at CH Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St Sidney. A memorial mass will be held Thursday, September 9, at 11:00AM at Sacred Heart Church 15 Liberty St. Sidney. Fr. Bernard Osei Ampong will officiate.
