Obituary of Charles A. Wightman

Charles A. Wightman, born on January 8, 1927 in Norwich, NY, passed away at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was son of the late Charles B. and Neva (Marean) Wightman. Chick's mother Neva died when he was in third grade. Stan and Adda Crawley and family lived across the street and were like family to Chick; he was lovingly referred to as their third son. He graduated from Norwich High School in 1945 where he excelled in baseball, football and wrestling. While in school, he had part time jobs with Tesher Colonial, set pins at the Brown Ave. Bowling Alley, and was a store clerk for Victor Markets. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served in China. On November 20, 1949, he was married to Jeanne Tiffany in Norwich. Charles was a Mason for 70 years, as well as a member of the American Legion and Elks Lodge. He loved to hunt and fish. He retired from Ellinwood Auto Parts in Sidney as store manager. Charles is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanne Wightman; 4 grandchildren: Rachel (John) Scroggs of Georgia; Sarah Terrell of Texas; Esther (Mathew) Reynolds of Washington and Charles W. Wightman, JR. of Norwich; 7 great-grandchildren: Julia and Thomas Scroggs, Hannah and Logan Terrell and Addison, Grace and Harper Wightman; sisters-in-law, Pat Tiffany and Joyce Wightman, son-in-law, James Blenis, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by his two children, daughter, Carolyn Blenis and son, Charles W. Wightman: brother, Robert Wightman; sister, Elizabeth and Alvin Whaley, and brother-in-law, Nelson Tiffany. Many thanks to the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford for the wonderful care Chick received. Thanks also to Raymond, Rose and John Hillman, Mark and Joleen Doliver, Todd and Kerry Holly, and Max and Theresa Blenis for all the help they were to Chick and Jeanne the past few years and months.
