Arthur James Tyler Unadilla, NY Arthur James Tyler, age 92, of Unadilla, passed away Friday, June 4, 2010, at Binghamton General Hospital. Art was born February 27, 1918, son of the late William Elin and Marie (Stephens) Tyler, in Rome, NY. He graduated from high school, Rome Free Academy, Rome, NY, in 1936. After high school, Art first worked as an apprentice mason, along with his twin brother, Lloyd, in his older brother, Emerson's, ceramic tile business, Tyler Tile, in Gloversville, NY. In 1940, Art joined his sister, Irene, and her husband, Sol Gerig, in Sidney, NY. Art married Mary Louise Sawyer on March 22, 1940, in Bainbridge, NY. Also in 1940, he began his 39 year career at Scintilla, Division of Bendix Corp, now Amphenol. During World War II he worked as a skilled lathe operator known for his meticulousness and ability to turn precision parts. After the war, Art's developing skills and abilities allowed him to advance his career in manufacturing design, layout and quality control. Over time, he assumed the title of Manufacturing Process Engineer. And, during his final approximately ten years with the company, he labored as one of only two individuals in the company on a top secret government project. In his early years, Art was an avid outdoorsman. He ranged freely, gleefully, and often over the hills and through the valleys, rivers and streams in this beautiful, rural area which he loved. Later, his interests turned towards an ever expanding appreciation of all things in the natural world around him. He was an unusually keen observer of weather patterns, rhythms of nature, (what we call ecology today), as well as the hidden habits of many birds and animals. His wife, Mary, as well as his children, Dawn and Jim, shared in this passion and understanding. Fully engaged in his career at Scintilla, Art still found time to plant several hundred beautiful trees over the years in the Sheep Pen Road area, town of Unadilla, where he lived, as well as in Sidney. He also built several beautiful stone walls and renovated several homes. Throughout his life, Art also had a keen interest in flying. In 1940, he was a member of the Sidney Scintilla Flying Club and co-owner of the club-owned plane, Aeronaca Chief. Art loved his church, the First Congregational Church in Sidney, which he and his wife, Mary, joined in 1949. He served as a deacon for a number of years, finding this especially meaningful in his faith. Most of all, Art cherished his family deeply, and was so proud of them and their accomplishments. The family would like to recognize the exceptional professional and loving care given for Art's comfort and well-being by all the staff at Binghamton General Hospital, Transitional Care Unit, during the period of his final illness.
