Raymond G. Johnson

October 7, 1928 – May 21, 2019

 

 

UNADILLA – Raymond Johnson, 90, of Unadilla, passed away at Valley View Manor Nursing Facility in Norwich on Tuesday, May, 21, 2019.

 

He was born October 7, 1928, son of the late Orville and Bessie (Schermerhorn) Johnson in Mt. Upton.  Ray graduated from Mount Upton Central School with the class of 1947.

 

Ray served his country in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952.  He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant.

 

He worked for Amphenol in Sidney from 1952 to 1987 and served as assessor for the Town of Unadilla for 49 years retiring in 2017. 

 

Ray was a 66 year life member of the Unadilla American Legion Post 578.  He served as Post, County and District Commander and with the Department of NY as Vice Commander.  He also served at Boys State for several years. 

 

Ray was predeceased by 2 brothers (William & Howard), 2 sisters (Gladys & Dorothy) and his son, Edward.

 

He is survived by his wife, Carol (Cook) Johnson of Unadilla; 2 sons, James (Linda) Johnson of Unadilla; Raymond (Maryanne) Johnson of North East, Maryland; 1 daughter, Constance (Joel) Jones of Sidney; 1 step-daughter, Lori (James); 1 daughter-in-law, Cathy (Ed) Johnson of Sidney; 8 grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Corinne Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Traci Raymond, Matthew Jones, Cheryl Jones, Brittany (Sean) Earnest and Morgana McGee; 3 great-grandchildren, Tamera Miller, Landon Wilcox and Max Johnson; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 10 A.M., Thursday, June 6, at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the NYS Veterans Home, Recreation Department, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
