Helen E. Halbert
Sidney, NY
Helen Elizabeth Cribbs Halbert went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 2, 2018. Her parents were Daniel A Cribbs & Emma C. Klein Cribbs originally from Danville, PA. Her brothers were John Philipp Jack Cribbs (US Army), Robert Cribbs (US Army) and Thomas J. Cribbs (Lt. Col., USAF). Her sisters were Theresa Cribbs Shelton and Jean Cribbs Eldridge. Her Grandfather originally was from County Cork Ireland.
Helen was a loving wife of Lawrence F. Bunker Halbert (US Navy) for 62 years, a loving mother of five children Larry, Jeff, Theresa, Joe, and Steve, as well as 10 marvelous grandchildren, and two great grand-daughters. She truly enjoyed her children, grand-children, and great grand-children.
Helen was lover of big band music, but just enjoyed joking around and having fun. We will truly miss her laugh. After she was married in 1956 she was employed at Scintilla. After a few years she decided to stay home to raise the family. Helen then took on babysitting for several area kids to earn extra money. She loved kids. We have no idea how she could care for all of us but somehow, she managed.
Mom was a very pious woman. She taught us the values of living mostly by example. We would all jump in the car and go to church every Sunday without fail. We never missed church. With seven of us we almost took up an entire pew at the church. She always made the holidays so special. Baking was her specialty with the homemade goodies. Each holiday season the house would be transformed into a museum like atmosphere for that specific holiday. Halloween was probably the most extraordinary. She was featured in the local Oneonta paper for her patriotic 4th of July decorations.
As she got older she just got sweeter. She had many health issues but rarely complained. No matter how bad she would feel she would still do anything for anybody at almost any given time. She often administered the sacrament of communion to the people that could not come to church. We had the greatest neighborhood that anyone could hope for. The Halbert house was neighborhood central.
She received exceptional care from her private nurses and Hospice Care. Helen (Hullah) and her great wit and personality will be truly missed.
