Russell E. Butler, Afton, NY
Russell Everett Butler, lifelong resident of Afton, was called home on June 30, 2017. Russell was born
February 9, 1925 to Clyde and Bernice (French) Butler. He is predeceased by his parents and his loving
brother Howard Butler. He is survived by his sisters Irene Barr Lewis of Fairmont WV, Elizabeth Laman
Willes (Ross) of Afton NY, and Margaret Gilgallon of Chester SC. He is also survived by his close friend
Beth Silverstein and her family. He was a loving Uncle to four generations of nieces and nephews.
Russell attended college at Clarkson and was a US Army veteran, serving during WWII in the liberation of
France. Soon after his honorable discharge in 1946, he began his career at Scintilla and worked there
through the years it was Bendix, Allied and Amphenol. He retired in 1986 as a Supervising Process
Engineer. He loved to travel whether for work or leisure. Once retired, he completed a trip around the
United States which he truly enjoyed. Russell was an original member of Afton Sertoma and was a long
time member of the Afton Baptist Church, serving in many capacities including singing in the choir. He
had a beautiful singing voice and loved all types of music. He played multiple instruments; being best at
the clarinet and piano. Russell was the family caretaker, caring for his mother and uncles later in their
lives.
Russell was close to this brother and sisters and was a loyal friend. He touched many lives and was
adored by his family and friends. He will be sadly missed and he has left a hole in many hearts.
Calling hours will be held at the Afton Baptist Church on Friday, July 7, at 10:00, followed by the funeral
at 11:00 and the burial at the Afton Glenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to
