Glenn Leon Barnard, 88, died Monday, March 27, 2017 at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born in Afton, NY on April 25, 1928 to the late Floyd and Ruth (Hendrickson) Barnard.
Glenn graduated from Afton High, an outstanding athlete in 4 sports and chosen to Pitch in Cooperstown. He attended college in Oregon and Colorado, until entering the US Army in October 1950.
In June 1951, he was part of "Operation Blue Jay", an effort between US forces and Denmark to transport materials to build Thule AFB in Greenland. He was then sent to Korea where he spent 10 months on the front lines. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged in October 1952.
On August 15, 1953, he married Shirley Parker at St. Anne's Church in Afton. He and his brother formed Barnard Brothers, for all types of construction. Glenn eventually built and sold 6 houses on Dingman Hill and Maple Manor. He also built 4 homes in his "spare time."
He greatly loved his wife, son and his doggies. He was a true and loyal friend. Glenn was an avid Duke Basketball fan. He enjoyed working, fishing, traveling and golfing. He was a former member of Sundown and Afton Golf courses and a member of Bainbridge American Legion # 0806.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 63 ½ years; his adored son Phillip and family of St. Petersburg, FL; niece, Karen Boigeol; nephews: Gary Merritt, Stacey Barnard; cousins, Mary Poltz and Alice Sines; and Rolan Jackson and family of Southside, AL.
Also surviving are his loyal and faithful friend Lloyd Elwood of Bainbridge; Tim, Michael and Mikayla Roach of Afton, Classmate, Ray Decker of Michigan, the Teelon sisters and his barber, Rick Whitney.
He was predeceased by his brother, Paul and his wife Doris; their sons, Lynn and Carrol; mother-in-law, Bertha Parker; sister-in-law, Nina (Allen) Merritt; nephew, Larry Sims, cousin Horace; golf buddy Bob Hosier; dear friend, Lynn Teelon; his canine babies, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services with military honors will be held in the spring with a date to be announced later.
