Julia Riley VanDenburgh, 101, of Bainbridge, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Hampshire House in Oneonta where she's been residing since 2013. Julia was born on March 5, 1915, one of eight children born to the late Charles E. and Anna (Norton) Riley in North Sanford, NY.
Julia graduated from Bainbridge High School as class valedictorian. She went on to attend Hartwick College, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority. She graduated in 1936 with a Bachelors Degree in mathematics. She worked for American Plastics Corp. for nearly 25 years as an executive secretary as well as worked for ten years in the insurance industry. In 1971, she began working for the NYS Dept. of Labor in Norwich, retiring in 1980.
On October 11, 1953, Julia was married to Kenneth A. VanDenburgh in Bainbridge. He predeceased her in August 1983 after nearly 30 years of marriage.
Julia was active in many local organizations including the Bainbridge Chapter #354 Order of the Eastern Star and the Order of the Amaranth George F. Johnson Court #168 in Endicott, both of which she held numerous state offices. She was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Bainbridge, where she belonged to the Women's Club and the UMW. She also belonged to the Bainbridge Historical Society and the B-G Alumni Association.
Julia is survived by her brother, James O. Riley of Washington as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Julia was predeceased by: her brothers: Kenneth, Ralph and Egbert Riley, and sisters: Elizabeth Bosket, Esther Andreson and Katherine Mott.
Friends may call from 5:00-7:00pm on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. There will be an Order of the Amaranth service at 6:45 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 13th at the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge, 27 North Main St. Bainbridge, NY 13733. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the United Methodist Church of Bainbridge may be considered.
