Obituary of Hyunsook P. Cordes

Hyun-sook Park Cordes Sidney, NY Hyun-sook Park Cordes misfortunately and prematurely passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Wilson Hospital. Sook, as her American friends knew her, was born on April 18, 1960 in Seoul, South Korea. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1980 with a Masters in Physical Therapy from Yun Sei University. In 1989, Sook was compelled by the Korean CIA to leave South Korea due to her work as president of the 7,700 member Seoul hospital workers union. Sook subsequently attended BYU Hawaii and then the University of Hawaii. There Sook met her future husband, Richard "Rick" Eric Park Cordes where they were in the chemistry doctoral program. The couple married in 1999 and their daughter, Bernardina Ki Cordes, was born in 2000. In 2007, Sook graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York Chiropractic College with a Masters of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. The following year, her family moved to Sidney, New York where Sook and Rick opened their partnership practice in alternative medicine, Family Acupuncture and Chiropractic. Sook practiced her art with great care and expertise and she will be missed by her many patients who have benefitted from her healing skills and compassion. Sook tended to life. She was a devoted wife and tireless mother who always gave of herself to her family, friends and patients. When she was not at one of her daughter's academic, musical or sporting events, she would be gardening, or searching for new plants, herbs, and flowers. Sook was predeceased by her father, Sang-Moon Park, in 1997. She is survived by her; husband Richard Eric Park Cordes, daughter Bernardina Ki Cordes, mother Hyun Soon Ki, sister Ae-Sook Park, brothers Hong-Koo and Jin-Koo Park, and her beloved nieces and nephews. Calling hours shall be 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, New York 13838. Her memorial service shall be at 4:00 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2016 at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers please make a donation, in Sook's name, online, to democracynow.org/donate. Sook's friends shall be invited on a fine and fair day in the Spring of 2017 to plant perennials at her home in a celebration of her life and spirit.
