Burton S. Blackman
Guilford—Burton S. Blackman, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City. Burton was born on July 16, 1926, son of the late Floyd and Mary (Parks) Blackman in New Berlin, NY.
On November 14, 1945, he was married to Frances Stanley in Rogers Hollow. They shared 48 years of marriage until she predeceased him in 1994.
Burton served his country in the United States Army during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1947. He worked for Hotalings as well as Dexheimers, and drove truck for many years. He went on to retire from Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, and following retirement, drove school bus for Bainbridge-Guilford School District. He also had a garage at home and would do small mechanic jobs on the side.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as racing, watching both NASCAR and local dirt track.
He is survived by: 7 children: David and Connie Blackman of Bainbridge, Don and Letitia Blackman of Mt. Upton, Barbara Butler and her companion, Jim of Masonville, Janice and John Morley of Sidney Center, Jean Brennan of Unadilla, James Blackman and his companion, Barb of Afton, and Dan and Crystal Blackman of Guilford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; half sister, Pauline and Dave DeForest of Rogers Hollow; three half brothers: Don Newell of Norwich, Bill and Betty Newell of Copes Corners and Richard and Maggie Newell of Norwich; sister-in-law, Shirley and Gerry Bates of Watertown, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Frances, Burton was predeceased by son-in-law, Frank Butler and half brother, Oliver Blackman.
Friends are invited to call from 12:00-1:00pm on Friday, November 11, 2016 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. Funeral services will begin at 1:00pm at the funeral chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Guilford Fire Department, PO Box 9 Guilford, NY 13780 or to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 E. Main St. Sidney, NY 13838.
