Bernard ("Bernie") F. Theobald (80) passed away peacefully in Ocala, Florida surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. Bernie was born in Rome, NY and was predeceased by his parents, Adelbert and Helen Theobald and his first wife, Beverly. Bernie married Patricia Akullian June 21, 1987. Bernie enjoyed golf, kayaking, traveling spending time with his family, and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon, Florida. Bernie was a devoted family man, always putting his family first. He attended The New York State College for Teachers in Albany, NY, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees as well as a Certificate of School Administration. After graduation, Bernie served in the US Marine Corps Reserve. Bernie began his education career as a Social Studies teacher and assistant principal at Shaker Jr. High in Colonie, NY. He then became principal for the Sidney Central School District from 1965 – 1990. During that time, Bernie was very active in the community serving on the boards of Delaware County Mental Health, Sidney Library, Sidney Hospital, Community Chest (now United Way), Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Sidney Chamber of Commerce, Next-to-New Thrift Store, and the Sidney Golf and Country Club. In 2014, Bernie was inducted into the Sidney Central School Alumni Association Wall of Fame for Distinguished Alumni and Educators for his Exemplary Leadership in Education and Community Service. In 2007, Pat and Bernie relocated from Sidney, NY, to Dunnellon, FL where they built a home by the beautiful Rainbow River. Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Patricia Theobald; his children, Karen S. Theobald, of Ft. Myers, FL; Kelley A. Dorrill and her husband Mark of Dunwoody, GA; Keith D. Theobald and his wife Terri of Sidney, NY; Kevin B. Theobald and his wife Kate of Holly Springs, NC; Laura D'Agostino and her husband Matthew of Sudbury, MA; Jennifer Akullian Avery and her husband Mark of San Francisco, CA; Lisa Gentry and her husband Benjamin of Grove Town, GA; nine adoring grandchildren include Michael and Elizabeth Dorrill, Brad and Sarah Theobald, Cameron Theobald, Anna and Kimberly Gentry, Asher and Maizie D'Agostino. Bernie is also survived by four siblings, Bruce Theobald and his wife Mary of Vestal, NY; Donna Cluse and her husband William of Southport, NC; Pat Abrams and Suzanne Elston of Gainesville, FL, as well as many special nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Hospice of Marion County, 3231 SW 34th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34474 (or Hospice of your choice) or National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 300, Maimi, FL 33131. Calling hours will be Sunday, May 1st from 6-8 pm at CH Landers Funeral Home of Sidney NY, with funeral service at 11:00am Monday, May 2nd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, NY.
