Karen Evelyn Ruland passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of love and family.

Karen was born in Huntington, NY on August 12, 1941, to Edward and Evelyn Kelsey. She enjoyed a happy childhood in East Northport and was a graduate of Northport High School. Growing up, Karen enjoyed Girl Scouts and spending time with her best friend, Lois Gordon. She enjoyed music and was especially fond of Elvis Presley.

In 1958, Karen met the love of her life, George, at the Greenlawn Fire Department Fair. They married on July 17, 1960, the day before George's 25th birthday. Together they enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 66 years, creating a happy home for their family including four children: Cheryl (Michael), George (Annette), David (Mindi) and Sherry (Bill); eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was also very fond of the variety of dogs that they shared. Nothing brought her more joy than a visit or phone call from her family.

She enjoyed traveling and toured the country with her husband. She loved bingo and the slots at the casino. We all have many memories of her at the dining room table playing cards and board games together with her friends, relatives, children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader of novels. She enjoyed making crafts and made many blankets and ceramics and gifted many in the family with her handiwork. Karen loved to decorate thoroughly and passionately, for each holiday season but especially Christmas.

Karen was tough. She was a cancer survivor for over 25 years and a supporter of the Saint Jude organization, which made a great impression on her while she visited there on one of her trips. The family requests that donations be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.

Karen will be greatly missed for her colorful spirit, and her unconditional love of her family and friends.
