Frederick Leon Mayes (Teddy)

Frederick Leon Mayes, age 83, passed away peacefully on July 28th in St. Johns, FL, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived a life defined by determination, adventure, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. He was known for his quick wit and amazing sense of humor and held onto that until his last days.

Fred proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and after his release, decided he wanted to fly. True to his determined nature, he pursued that goal and became a pilot. He was always thankful for his friend, Bernard Ford, who supported him throughout that endeavor. Fred loved each job that he held, retiring from GAMA Aviation out of the Norwich airport. One of the greatest highlights of his career was serving as a pilot for legendary golfer Gary Player, traveling the world and experiencing adventures few have the opportunity to enjoy. He made many lifelong friends throughout his career.

Above all else, Fred cherished his family. There was nothing he loved more than being with his family and his face really lit up every time he saw or spoke to his great grandchildren. Even during his courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease, he insisted on flying home regularly to be with his family in NY, refusing to let the disease diminish the importance of family in his life.

Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Mayes, with whom he shared many wonderful years, had two daughters Robin Halaquist and Sheri Miller, and built a loving family. He is survived by his devoted and loving current wife, Sharon Mayes, who cared for him with extraordinary dedication, especially throughout the past several years of his illness. He is also survived by Robin Halaquist (Ed Bailey), Sheri Miller (Dennis Kemak) Kim Sylvester (Chris); Sherry Kirsche (Steve); and Jim (Robin) Peck. He cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Jenna (Brooks) Buttice, Brady, Hadley, Emerson & Brandt; Brett Hayes (Laurel Ames); Chelsi "Redling" Rosa; Trevor Halaquist (Jackie Ryder); Eddie Bailey; Christopher and Sydney Sylvester; Melanie, Zach, Patrick and Erin Kirsche; James III, Janine, Lacey, Jake, Kyla, Kendal and Madison Peck; Laura Duggan: Lily, and Levi Lane. He is also survived by his brother, Tom Mayes (Bev); his sister, Valerie Hawley; goddaughter Tara Lounsbury; as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, family members and friends. We can't forget that he is also survived by his very special companion, his beloved dog, Hailey, who meant the world to him.

He was predeceased by his father, Wayland Sowles; mother, Loretta Mayes; stepfather, Neil Mayes; his brother, Donald Mayes; his sister, Loretta McCall and brother-in-law, Mike Hawley.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Hospice caregivers and family members who supported him with compassion and dignity towards the end of his illness.

Though he has taken his final flight, he will be remembered for his determination, his adventurous spirit, the laughter he brought to those around him and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the memories he created, and the example he set of pursuing your dreams with courage and positivity, never losing sight of what matters most. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered and loved.

All are invited to a graveside service on 10/2/26 at 1 PM at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge with a gathering to celebrate Fred's life after.
