Janice T. Phillips Obituary

Janice Marie Terry Phillips passed away peacefully at her home in Sidney New York, May 31st, just past her 96th birthday. Her family was in attendance. Janice was born May 26th, 1930, in the village of North Sanford New York, the daughter of Leslie Ward Terry and Frances Terry (nee Gardner).

Janice is survived by her daughter Pamela and her longtime partner Donna Stanton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Most appreciated were her favorite niece, Tracy DeMatteo and her husband Jim. Their love and support have helped maintain a sense of security and joy in Janice's life. Numerous others have played extremely significant roles in Janice's life. Claude and Bonnie, Maureen, Dave and Zach, Angela and Owen were all such people. In the past several years, a newcomer, Mary, came into Janice's circle of friends. All bear testimony that angels do walk among us.

In 1948, Janice graduated from Bainbridge High School. She was active in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and homemaking. Post graduation, Janice worked in a clerical position at Scintilla, where she met her future love and husband, Harvey. Most of her married life she spent as a full-time homemaker. For several years Janice was employed seasonally at Keith Clarks.

Throughout her life, Janice enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests. After marriage, fishing and hunting were frequent. For over 50 years, camping with her husband and family was a mainstay of her life. They were always accompanied by one of their three beloved Scottish Terriers. Later, Janice took up photography and spent many hours waiting for that special shot of nature or preserving memories of their travels and family.

Janice had a passion for the sport of bowling. She was in several local leagues, covering many decades. Teammates became her very close friends. Janice attended many state tournaments with her special teammates and carried an average that any bowler could be proud of.

Janice was a lifetime member of the Mayhood Historical Group. She especially enjoyed the live music and socializing at the summer Sunday evening ice cream socials. Janice was an avid music enthusiast, reflected by her vast eclectic collection of music.

A love of handicrafts was a constant in Janice's life, and she excelled in all. A master seamstress was witnessed by the quality of the handmade garments she crafted. Tackling any task, she reupholstered furniture, sewed draperies, and even created her own seat cover patterns for her daughter's sports car. Janice reconditioned countless dolls that she picked up at various sales. They all come to wear bright new outfits which Janice designed and sewed, crocheted or knitted. Many of these dolls found new homes through local charity organizations.

Putting her talents to further humanitarian use, Janice donated countless knit caps to the school children of Sidney Elementary School. She crocheted hundreds of hats and booties sets for hospital newborns. As a supporter of the Humane Society for years, she provided many items for their sales.

Janice was predeceased in 2016 by her husband of almost 66 years, Harvey William Phillips. She was also predeceased by her 3 siblings and their spouses; Jeanne Thomas (Keith), Josephine Coe (Robert) and her baby brother Arthur Terry, (better known as Jack) (Edna). Janice's death was preceded, as well, by all 5 of her husband's siblings and their respective spouses.

Per the wishes of Janice, there will be no public calling hours or services. Private interment will occur at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delaware Valley Humane Society or Helios Care are requested.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel. Condolences and memories may be shared online at landersfh.com.
