Ernst R. Keidel Obituary
Ernst Rolf Keidel
August 27, 1946 – March 30, 2026
Ernst Keidel, a devoted veteran and beloved family man, passed away on March 30, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on August 27, 1946, in Hamburg, Germany, Ernst immigrated to the United States and built a life defined by service and determination. At just 17 years old, he chose to leave high school a year early to enlist in the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1967.
Ernst took great pride in becoming a naturalized citizen, an achievement that mirrored his lifelong commitment to his adopted country. While in the military, he remained dedicated to his personal growth, earning his GED and later achieving a college degree. After a break in service, he reenlisted in 1979 and continued to serve honorably until his retirement from the Army in 1988.
It was during his military career that Ernst's life took its most meaningful turn. While stationed in Korea, he met Hayo, the woman who would become his devoted wife and lifelong partner. Together, they raised a family grounded in the values of resilience, loyalty, and hard work.
Ernst was predeceased by his parents Wilhelm and Maria Tellbach, as well as his older sister and brother.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Hayo Keidel; his daughter, Heidi Maryada; and his two sons, Armin and Wilhelm. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Erik and Magnus Melzer, who brought him great joy. Ernst leaves behind a legacy of service—the courage of a young man who stepped forward to serve before he had even finished school, and the strength of a patriarch who valued education and provided a world of opportunity for his family.
