Richard F. Barnes Obituary

Richard Frank (Dick) Barnes, 87 of Unadilla, NY, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 18, 2026 at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Morrison, Tennessee.


Dick was born in Sidney, NY to Mildred and Milton Barnes on July 24, 1938. He went to high school at Sidney Central School and graduated in 1957. He went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1964. Dick married Patricia Caswell on April 4, 1959 in Sidney, NY. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune and Hawaii. After an honorable discharge, Richard and "his bride" returned to reside in Sidney, NY where they raised their children.


He worked and retired as a Communications Specialist for New York State Police, Troop C in Sidney, NY for 33 years. Dick was very proud of his job which included compiling information state police investigators use to crack major cases. He enjoyed sharing stories about his work with his family and friends.


He enjoyed bowling, golfing, poker games, casino trips and NASCAR racing. He was a member of the MacDonald Hose Volunteer Fire Department, the VFW, and the Sidney Elks Lodge. Richard's friends also knew him as Bad News, Barney, Dickie and Big Block. His friends and family were often put "on report" by Dick.


Richard is survived by his daughters, Cindi (Rusty) of Morrison, TN and Connie (Brian) of Virginia Beach, VA; his daughter-in-law Jennifer Barnes, Sidney, NY; his 11 grandchildren Matthew (Carly), Meghan (Jeremy), Michael (Chelsea), Derek (Kaylin), Lyra, Christopher (Jordan), Erica (Jason), Owen, Marannda, Stephanie, and Kyle (Ashley); his 12 great grandchildren Carter, Marlea, Olivia, Hadley, Lawrence, Ivan, Monty, Arlo, Travis, Kelsey, Reid and Wrenley. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Delores (Edwin) Wilson, Edward "Eddie" Barnes, Janice Mills, and Barbara (Roger) Cawley as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.


He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Barnes; his son, Rick Barnes; his parents, Milton Barnes and Mildred Bennett; his brother, Milton "Roger" Barnes; his sisters-in-law, Joyce Barnes and Mary Barnes; his brothers-in-law, Jim Mills and Ray Cawley.


As many of Dad/Grandpa's family lived in different states and areas of New York, we would like to say a special THANK YOU to the Sidney Elks Lodge and its members for being his second family. He loved you.


Visitation will be held on April 11 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a memorial service to follow at 6:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, NY 13838. A Celebration of Life will also be held on Sunday April 12 at 1:00 pm at the Sidney Elks Lodge, River Street, Sidney NY.


Memorial donations may be made to COMPASSUS (Hospice), 1805 North Jackson, Ste. 11, Tullahoma, TN 37388. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to COMPASSUS for taking such good care of Richard in his final days. Memorial donations can also be made to The Sidney Elks Lodge, River Street, Sidney, NY.
