Jean D. Kohler Obituary

Jean Derkje Kohler, 81, formerly of Oneonta and Sidney, NY, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026 in Windsor Locks, CT.

Born and raised in Irondequoit, NY, Jean was a graduate of St. Lawrence University, where she met her beloved husband, Paul. The couple married in 1968 and shared 40 wonderful years together until Paul's passing in 2008. Paul, a U.S. Army veteran, is interred at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY, where Jean will be laid to rest beside him.

Jean is survived by her two sons: Jeffrey Kohler of Cambridge, NY, married to Kelsey, and their sons Jensen (18) and Aksel (15); and Mark Kohler of East Hampton, CT, married to Nancy, and their children Leah (19) and Benjamin (16). She is also survived by her sister, Kathy Laitenberger, of Rochester, NY.

Jean dedicated her career to education, serving as a high school mathematics teacher. After taking time to raise her children, she returned to the classroom where she inspired countless students with her passion for learning.

Jean was a woman of many talents and generous spirit. A lifelong crafter, she found her greatest joy in quilting, creating beautiful works for her home and countless charitable causes. Her quilting circle at The Little Red School House in Oneonta became a cherished source of friendship and community.

Throughout her life, Jean was deeply committed to serving others. She was an active member and treasurer of First Congregational Church in Sidney, volunteered at the A.O. Fox Hospital Gift Shop and dedicated many years to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care (now Helios Care), first as an in-home companion volunteer and later in fundraising efforts.

Jean's legacy lives on through her family and the countless lives she touched through her volunteer work and generous heart. Her quilts will continue to bring warmth and comfort to those in need.

A committal service will be held at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helios Care (helioscare.org).
