John F. Himmelein Obituary

John Himmelein, 79, of Guilford, NY, passed away at home on June 27, 2025. Born in Woodbury, NJ, to the late Berneice and Bud Wahl, John was first a journalist for the Burlington County Times before joining the American Friends Service Committee to lead non-violent protests for civil rights and against the Vietnam War.

This experience prepared him for a distinguished nursing career, starting at Hahnemann Hospital's Trauma Center in Philadelphia (1996-2007). Fulfilling a dream of country living, he and his wife Barbara moved to Guilford, where he became the heart and soul of the A.O. Fox Hospital Tri-Town Campus ER (2007-2025). His compassionate care earned him numerous accolades, including the 2022 Mary Holland RN Memorial Nurse Excellence Award. He was remembered as a leader who "made everyone feel like family."

A loving father, brother, husband, and friend, he will be deeply missed. He was predeceased by his daughter, Riel Himmelein, in 2023.

John is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara L. Gregson; his children, Mat and Eva Himmelein, and Bianca King; stepsons, Nico Miceli and Till Manthey; sisters, Grayle Keeley and Norma Murray; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held at the Sidney Moose Lodge #277 in Sidney, NY, on Saturday, August 2, at 4:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
