With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Margreta Wilhemetta Henrietta Bartels on July 19th, 2025. Better known as Tante Margret, she was born April 4th, 1935, in Astoria, Queens, NY. She lived in many places in the state of New York, New York City, and Germany. She was half a country farm girl and half city folk. She walked many miles to school until 8th grade. When she lived in NYC, she walked all over to museums, theaters, churches, and other sites. She was the oldest sister, helping her mother cook, clean, and mend clothes. She worked for St Michael’s church, St Peter’s church, and the archdiocese as a cook and travelled many places with her congregation. She also passed on her recipes and love for art and culture to her great grandnieces. Margret took care of everyone and lent a helping hand to friends, family, and strangers without hesitation. She loved reading, crocheting, sewing, gardening, and being with her family. She was a strong loving compassionate woman for 90 wonderful years. She was the family heroine, an epitome of a simple life full of joy and grace.
We are forever grateful for the love and care she received over the years at Delhi Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was family to the residents and employees there. Everyone would say how well presented and kind she was. She was everyone’s adopted grandma. She spent her time there as a social butterfly and spending time at most of the activities or visiting her family in the courtyard.
Margreta is predeceased by her mother Alma, father Ernest, brother Wilhem, and half-brother Michael. Margreta is survived by her sister Elsa, Charles, and Ernest. Tante Margret cherished her nephews Stuart (Michele) and Scott Bartels. She was a matriarchal figure for her great grandnieces Bridget, Amanda and Kaitlin. And her great, great grandniece, Margretta “Maggie” May brought so much joy and love for her the last few years.
There will be a service to honor her at C H Landers Funeral Home July 31, 2025, from 5pm to 7pm.
