Catherine "Kay" Winnick Obituary

Catherine Margaret Winnick (Kay), a devoted wife, mother, and beloved member of the Sidney, NY community, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia, NY. She was 94 years old.

Born on March 22, 1931, in a farmhouse in rural Candor, NY, Kay faced adversity at a young age when her mother passed away when she was just eight years old. She was lovingly raised by her grandmother on a nearby farm. A gifted student, Kay attended both Catholic and public school in Candor, graduating as the valedictorian of her high school class.

In 1952, she married Dr. Edward Peter Winnick (Doc), her husband of 68 years, in Owego, NY, during his final year at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Kay worked at the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus and later as an inspector at the Ithaca Gun Factory. After a brief period during which Doc played professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals, the couple moved to Endicott, NY, where their first son, Gary, was born.

Later that year, Kay and Doc settled in Sidney, NY, where they purchased a veterinary practice on Weir Street. Their second son, Dr. Richard Winnick, was born in Sidney in 1956. In 1959, they purchased 15 acres on Lower River Street, where they built a home modeled after one they had seen in a magazine and added a veterinary hospital on the property. Kay worked as the bookkeeper and assistant in the practice, balancing her roles in business and family life with grace. Their third son, Dr. James Winnick, was born in 1971.

Kay and Doc shared a love of antiques and spent many weekends traveling across the Northeast with their youngest son in a motorhome, buying and selling at antique shows. One of their proudest achievements was the restoration of an early 1800s Greek Revival farmhouse that they disassembled in Candor and rebuilt on a hilltop property in Sidney. They lived there for over 20 years until Doc's passing in 2020.

Following her husband's death, Kay lived in Denver, CO, and later in Oakdale, CA, with her sons before moving to Saratoga Springs, NY, in 2021. She was hospitalized that same year after a fall and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2022. Kay resided at Woodlawn Commons Assisted Living before transitioning to Baptist Health Center in 2024.

Kay is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Perigo of Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law, Laura Myer of Ithaca, NY; and her three sons: Gary Winnick of Saratoga Springs, NY; Dr. Richard Winnick of Denver, CO; and Dr. James Winnick of Oakdale, CA. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Julie (Winnick) Witkowski and Andrea (Winnick) Martin; and five great-grandchildren: Alex, Brendan, Ryan, Jamison, and Abigail. Kay also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Kay will be remembered for her intelligence, resilience, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the memories shared by those who loved her.
