Obituary of Frederick G. Smith

Fred Smith, 87, currently a resident of Unadilla with a heart that never left Bainbridge, NY passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 11, 2025. He was born on December 10, 1937, in Bainbridge, NY, a son of the late Clair and Nellie (Stanton) Smith. Fred married his second wife, Debra Cole, on August 27, 1983; blessed with 41 years of marriage. Fred worked many different jobs from construction, propane gas delivery, part-time Jerry's Inn bartender and factory work, retiring from Amphenol Corporation in 2002. He loved hunting, camping, bowling, golfing, playing softball, racing and was a forever Packer fan. Enjoying a Red Eye or two in the process. He also enjoyed lively poker, pitch and domino games with family and friends. But most of all - getting together with family. Much of Fred's time over the years was spent serving or belonging to the following organizations: Bainbridge Cub Scout Pack 52, Bainbridge Fire Department, Bainbridge Jr. Bowling League, Bainbridge Sportsman's Club, Bainbridge United Methodist Church, Sidney Boat Club and Sidney Elks Lodge #2175. He was also inducted into the areas Bowling Hall of Fame. Fred is survived by his children Karee (John) Gilmore of Sidney, Deb (Don) Shafer of Greene, Josh (Pam) Ostrander of Unadilla. In-laws, Wendy Smith, Donna (Bob) Decker, Paula Cole, Nora Cole-Ostrander and Shawn Ostrander. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and special friends. He was predeceased by children Lisa Smith Bolster (2000) and Jeremiah Ostrander (2016), sisters, Mary (Vic) Millus and Beverly (Bunny) Rowe; brothers Harry (Thelma), William (Mary) and Steve Smith. In-laws, David "Rusty" Cole, Ralph Cole and Bill Ostrander. Services will be held Wednesday, May 21st at 11AM in the Bainbridge United Methodist Church with a graveside internment at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Fred's memory may be directed to the Bainbridge Fire Department, 22 W. Main St., Bainbridge, NY 13733 or the Sidney Elks Lodge #2175, 104 River St., Sidney, NY 13838. Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney, NY.
