Jean was born on September 22, 1934 in Downsville, NY to William and Caroline (Buck) Shields. She was the youngest of 5 children and the apple of her father's eye. Jean moved to Sidney in 1950 to raise her family. She stayed home to raise her children until her youngest started school. Jean was then employed at Camp Brace, a NYS Division for Youth facility, in Masonville, NY. She was the Accounts Receivable Clerk there for 14 years. She retired from the Amphenol Corporation where she had worked in the sales department. She was grateful for the many friends she made there. Jean was a former member of the Sidney Emergency Squad Auxiliary and the Sidney Elk's Lodge Auxiliary. She also bowled in the women's Wednesday night bowling league at 20th Century Lanes for many years. Jean was taught by her grandmother at a young age to knit and was an accomplished knitter of beautiful sweaters for family members of all ages. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, dancing to big band music and traveling. Jean was known for her many sayings and came out with ones that would stop and make you think. Jean adored children, specifically babies, and was happiest when she was holding them in her loving arms. She had the knack of soothing even the fussiest of infants. More than anything, Jean loved to smile and was known to even smile through her beautiful blue eyes. Jean married Raymond Selleck of Unadilla, NY in 1983, whom she is survived by. She is also survived by her son, Thomas (Diane) Tompkins, Hillsborough, NJ, and her daughters, Cheryl (Jeffery) Cumm, Jacksonville, FL and Kristin (Steven) Barber, Bainbridge, NY. Her great-grandchildren include: Emily, Kyle, and Dylan Tompkins, Blake and Natalie Hopkins and Landon West. Jean has one surviving sister, Helen Knox as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
